THE HEALING POWER OF GROUPS

Our first group experience was our family of origin, so when we become part of groups subsequently in our lives (for instance a team at work, social group, church or the family group we create as adult partners and parents) we inevitably bring ways of behaving feeling and thinking with us into these new groups. These may be behaviours that 'work' so enriching our lives and relationships, or they may cause us difficulty and pain through unresolved conflict for instance, and therefore distance us from those we love. I believe passionately that a group or workshop led by an experienced and caring leader can heal past hurts, can build confidence and self knowledge, and can help us appreciate our successes and give us useful tools to lead a more satisfying life.

A well led group, be it for personal development or professional learning, offers participants an opportunity to come out of isolation with their issues and to share and compare their experience with the experience of others. It allows us to receive feedback and information about how our behaviour affects others and to take time to process how others affect us; and to feel the relief that I am not the only one, or I am not alone in feeling like this!! We can find motivation to act, to change our lives.

Groups provide an opportunity for personal development and growth. They enable participants on the many courses I have run over the past 25 years to make new choices and positive decisions for themselves in their lives; also to supporting and challenging each other in a confidential and warm environment.

We may have learned to swallow and suppress feelings, positive or negative, for each other and we may not have learned to be effective communicators, particularly in close relationships (friendships, intimate partnerships, family), or difficult situations and relationships at work.
I have been involved in groups as leader or participant for 30 years and through them have made life changing decisions.
